Vampire and Dhampire Abilities and Powers

There are three types of abilities that a vampire may manifest. Dhampires will manifest abilities as well, but very differently. There are various powers under each type.

  • Physical: Speed, Strength, Endurance, Heightened Senses
  • Mental/Emotional: Mesmerize, Hypnosis, Compulsion, Terrify
  • Magical: Shape shifting, Magical Attunement, Healing
Training time for each of the categories is different. It takes about four hundred years to truly master an aspect of your physical body. To master the manipulation of a sentient’s mind or heart in one way or another takes about five hundred years. And while there is always more to learn, the time it takes to be considered a master of a magical ability varies from one to the other. You can never start a vampire with more than four abilities, and only one can be mastered.



Physical abilities are speed, strength, endurance, and heightened senses.

Endurance encompasses stamina and how thick-skinned a vampire is. They are also those abilities that are reactionary, and you have to be trained NOT to use them all the time, and properly. For example, J’hara’s speed has been mastered. If she hadn’t trained, she wouldn’t ever be able to move at a normal pace, nor control her movements at high speeds, and find herself running off cliffs or flying into walls. She would also have to feed almost seven times a night, which would be time consuming and inconvenient.

Dhampires will find that they are, physically, superior to the race that was the other parent. They do not have to be trained to use this superiority the way vampires do, but they will never be equal to a vampire who has any of the physical abilities.

Mental/Emotional abilities are ways that a vampire can manipulate other sentient creature’s minds. Only those with truly strong wills or protected by the Goddess are unaffected. It should be noted that a dhampire will never exibit more than one of these abilities, and they still have to be trained to use it. They are:

Hypnosis: This ability allows the vampire to leave suggestions in the mind of one victim. This can be anything from the idea the victim is a chicken, to a whole new memory of an event. Those of very light ability can leave little ideas that will wear off in minutes, while a master can change someone’s memory of something life changing forever.

Compulsion: This allows the vampire to give a command that will be obeyed. It can be anything from “Sleep” to “Slit your family’s throat and then your own.” The victim is fully aware that they are under the control of the vampire, and will remember exactly what happened. Commands to forget have to detail EVERYTHING (the setting, the exact actions, the clothes he was wearing, your description, every detail) or there will be flashbacks that will eventually break the compulsion, even a master’s. Those with little ability can make one person they made eye contact with do something for a limited amount of time. A master can make whole villages within the distance of his voice attack his enemies.

Mesmerize: This allows the vampire to make a victim feel affection for the vampire. Those with little ability can make prey welcome death, or use it against two victims to make them jealously vie for his affections for a short time. A master can make fifteen separate victims love him unconditionally permanently.

Terrorize: This allows the vampire to induce fear of himself in a victim. Someone with little ability can give a nonviolent person an active fear for several minutes. A master can turn a an enemy currently lunging for his neck to run screaming from the fight to cower in a “safe place” for days. This ability is never permanent, but many masters prefer it that way.

Magical abilities are the abilities that use the energies nature provides for us to work with. All of them require a great deal of study and research to be used effectively. The level of the ability doesn’t change; it manifests at the level it will stay for the vampire’s existence, and some are stronger than others, and some never manifest at all. Each is extremely potent, and takes a different amount of time to master. A dhampire may learn the other race's equivalent to healing and magic, but they will never manifest shape shifting. They are:

Magical Attunement: This is the ability that allows you to use the energies to create magic. The stronger the ability, the stronger the spells. As with normal mages, which way they take their studies varies, although the most common is blood magic. The likelihood of someone with this ability seeking out a master to learn from if their creator can’t teach them is high. The average time it takes to be considered a master is four hundred years.

Healing: This is the ability that allows you to use the energies to knit yourself and others back together. To effectively use this, the user will have to take time to learn about vampire psychology, and any other race he may use it on. Light abilities can knit flesh wounds back together in a matter of seconds, a mid level could heal other’s broken bones, while a Master can knit his severed limbs back on. This ability will not stop death by any of the curses, nor by beheading or destruction of the heart.

Shapeshifting: This is the ability that allows vampires to use the life energy of a victim to take different forms. Research is required on both the physiology of the animal form and habits to be completely convincing. They also have to eat the heart of a form they wish to take, and hold it down for a full night. The common forms are wolves, bats, and cats, but any animal save a Chaosian bond is acceptable. You can shape shift into bond creature, but not other races, and never more than two bond creatures. You can have no more than four forms. The stronger the form, the longer it takes to master, and the second is always harder than the first because you’re working against two sets of instincts instead of one. Learning less powerful forms take about a 75 years for first form, 150 for second, 300 for the third, and 550 for a fourth. Bond creatures take about 300 years for first form, 650 for the second.
